After countless years of use, your contemporary bar stool may not look so contemporary any more. It will show its wear and tear in its leathery (or pleathery) face. You may want to keep it for its timed appearance or you will want to throw it away. Instead of discarding your bar stool that is in otherwise good condition simply because of the seat, you can reupholster it. Here's an easy do-it-yourself guide to starting this project.
First, you should gather the proper materials you need to reconstruct the seat. Depending on what kind of fabric you want to use, plan to purchase at least 3/4 yards of it to fit a standard to extra tall barstool. Then buy a spray adhesive, staple gun and fabric glue to adhere the fabric to the seat. A flat head screwdriver will be needed for staple removing. Now you should have all the basics to get started.
Before you begin, you should place your barstool upside down so that you can more easily lift and remove the old covering. Now use a flat-head screwdriver and remove the staples that are holding the fabric in place. Pull the fabric off of the barstool. The cushion should be attached to the fabric and should therefore be removed at the same time. You can use your old fabric as a template for cutting your new piece of upholstery fabric. Flatten and straighten the old fabric out as much as you can so you can gauge the exact original size. After you are done, spray ahedsive (or glue) on the base of the stool so that the cushion can stay firmly in place. Lay your fabric and cushion (which you should also spray with glue) down and then place the stool upside down on top of it. Try to center the stool, now glued to the cushion, on the fabric. Curl the fabric around the base of the stool and staple it in place. If the corners are still sticking out, press the sides toward each other and fold the mateiral over the edge of the seat. Cut off excess fabric and staple again. If you want to add some flair, you can dress up the edges of your barstool with upholstery tacks that not only look classy but add some extra reinforcement. Now you have beautiful almost new contemporary barstools!
