Conduct your own Kitchen Bar Stool Experiment

It is time to run your own personal experiment! You want to purchase new furniture but you need to determine which pieces need to be replaced. It is time to figure out what needs to go and what you need to buy. This experiment can be a fun one especially if your family is unaware of what is going on. If you let them in on your little plan then you will not get the true results.

Here is what you do: you watch yourself and your family closely over the period of a week. This might sound like a long period of time to be conducting such a simple experiment but different pieces of furniture will see different amounts of use depending on what day it is. For instance, your kitchen bar stools are used often during the week. The kids love to eat breakfast here. However, the dining room sees much more breakfast traffic on the weekends because people have the time to sit down and enjoy a lovely meal.

All right, now that you understand the reasoning behind the time frame, the next step is to record the amount of use for each of these furniture items. Try to have a pad of paper and a pencil or pen on you at all times. Pretend that it is your new note-taking system, just in case your family members ask. You are trying to be less forgetful so you write things down that you need to remember the second something comes to your mind. Place yourself in a strategic location, maybe on a wood barstool; ideally, this spot is one from which you can observe several different pieces of popular furniture in the living room, kitchen, and dining room. When your family is home, start making those tally marks! Make sure to try to record the length of time each is in use as well.

At the end of the week, add up all the tallies. You might be surprised that the kitchen counter stools get the most frequent use but that they are used for short amounts of time. The couch on the other hand has fewer marks then expected, but each use lasted at least 30 minutes. Now that you have run your experiment successfully, you know what new items you need to buy!
